If you are in need of a professionally guided kayak tour or you want to explore the Central Coast waters on your own, you’ll get the ultimate kayaking experience with SLO Coast Kayaks.

The company was founded in 2009 by kayak designer and sea kayak guide Vincent Shay and Los Osos native and teacher, Emily Stern. SLO Coast Kayaks, LLC, offers world class guided recreational sea kayak tours of the Central Coast and kayak rentals in the Avila Beach area.

OUR MISSION

Whether you are a beginner or an expert recreational sea kayaking enthusiast, our goal is to give you the opportunity to explore the incredible, diverse and beautiful Central Coast ocean environment. We accomplish this goal by offering our clients a safety conscious atmosphere and an unforgettable experience. This includes exploring sea caves, getting a closer look at birds and sea life that only being in a sea kayak allows, and educating clients about the ocean ecosystems that make up the Central Coast.

So, come join us on one of our dynamic, guided kayak tours or explore on your own by renting one of our recreational sea kayaks. Either way, your experience is bound to be fun. We guarantee it!

MEET THE GUIDES

Vincent Shay
Vincent Shay is a photographer, kayak designer and lifelong waterman with over twenty years of experience in the ocean realm. He has successfully guided hundreds of recreational sea kayak tours over the years along the Central Coast and is passionate about what he does. Always safety conscious and full of energy, his aim is to not only make sure you have the best experience possible but also to make you a more skilled kayaker. His goal is to teach clients the best techniques in recreational ocean kayaking.

“For me, it is all about the people out there. I just love when someone who might be a bit apprehensive about going out in the ocean finally gets over that fear, listens to instruction and has the time of their life. That is why I do this,” explained Shay.

Shay is also a professional photographer and the owner of Vincent Shay Media (www.vincentshaymedia.com) where he concentrates on the active lifestyle and outdoor related photography. His work has been published in magazines such as Canoe & Kayak Magazine, Paddler, Kayak Sessions, and Stand Up Paddle Magazine and working with groups such as Patagonia, TEVA, and Deckers Corporation. He has also produced video for television.

Emily Stern
Emily Stern is not only a life-long water enthusiast and kayak guide, but one of SLO Coast Kayaks’ owners and founders! Her love for the ocean is evident because if you can’t find her in our office, you will probably find her either surfing, stand up paddling, or kayaking. Emily graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in English and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education. She is a high school English teacher who loves her job working with at-risk youth.

Ken Irwin
Ken Irwin’s specialty is local history! He is not only a knowledgeable ocean kayak guide for SLO Coast Kayaks but is also a trained Point San Luis Lighthouse Guide and Pecho Coast Lighthouse Trail Guide which means he is an expert on the history of the Avila Beach area and The Point San Luis Lighthouse. Ken is also very well versed on local marine ecosystems and cultural history of the area.

“I have been on or in the ocean my entire life! What I enjoy most is to share the ocean experience with others.”

We are very happy to have Ken with us and his enthusiasm for teaching our clients and introducing the wonderful world of ocean kayaking is second to none. That is why his motto is ‘Come kayak with me and I will get you closer to the action!’

You will not be disappointed to have Ken Irwin be your guide!
